Brick ruins of a Mazovian dukes' castle on an escarpment above the old Vistula bed, plus Góra Kalwaria with its Baroque street plan. A short trip close to the capital, also good with a dog.
Trip plan
Plan for the day
- 09:00 — leave Warsaw on the road toward Góra Kalwaria.
- 10:00 — Czersk Castle: towers, walls and the ruined courtyard.
- 11:30 — walk around the castle and along the escarpment, with views of the Vistula valley.
- 13:00 — lunch in Czersk or Góra Kalwaria.
- 14:30 — Góra Kalwaria: the market square, churches and streets tied to the town's Hasidic history.
- 16:30 — a walk by the Vistula.
- 18:00 — head back to Warsaw.
The weather matters a lot here. Spring and autumn are quiet at the castle, and on a sunny weekend it is worth arriving early.
What to see
- Czersk Castle, a brick seat of the Mazovian dukes.
- The Vistula escarpment, with a view over the river valley.
- The market square and churches of Góra Kalwaria, a town founded as a model New Jerusalem.
- The old Jewish cemetery in Góra Kalwaria.
- Orchards in the area, scented with apple blossom in May.
Where to eat
You will find pizzerias and simple restaurants around the market square in Góra Kalwaria, plus local inns by the roads. Look for apples, juices and preserves from nearby orchards, and in season buy fruit straight from growers.
