Otwock

A spa town near Warsaw with pine forests, the Świder river and wooden villas in the świdermajer style. An easy day trip by train from Warsaw, ideal for walking.

Trip plan

Plan for the day

  • 09:30 — train from Warsaw to Otwock.
  • 10:30 — arrive, have a coffee and walk from the station toward the historic villas.
  • 11:00 — stroll through streets lined with świdermajer wooden houses.
  • 13:00 — lunch in the centre.
  • 14:30 — walk through the pine forest to the Świder river.
  • 16:30 — relax by the river with a picnic or a coffee.
  • 18:00 — train back to Warsaw.

What to see

  • Wooden villas in the świdermajer style, with lacy verandas.
  • Dom pod Jedlami, one of the best-known buildings in this style.
  • The pine forests around the town, once the backdrop of its spa life.
  • The Świder river and its sandy banks.
  • Quiet streets and gardens on the edge of Otwock.

Where to eat

The centre of Otwock has cafés, bakeries and simple restaurants serving Polish food: soups, pierogi and fish. In summer, buy ice cream and pack something for a picnic by the Świder, since there are few eateries along the river. If you have a dog, you can take it on the forest paths, but keep it on a lead by the river. In summer the river is shallow and calm, and in autumn the forest looks its best.
