The manor where Frédéric Chopin was born, set in a park with the Utrata river and ponds. An easy, quiet trip from Warsaw that pairs well with Sochaczew and its museums.
Trip plan
Plan for the day
- 09:30 — leave Warsaw toward Sochaczew.
- 10:30 — arrive in Żelazowa Wola and visit the manor house where Chopin was born.
- 11:30 — walk the park along the Utrata, between ponds and old trees.
- 13:00 — lunch in Żelazowa Wola or Sochaczew.
- 14:30 — Sochaczew: the ruins of the Mazovian dukes' castle on the Bzura.
- 16:00 — a museum in Sochaczew, such as the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum.
- 17:30 — head back to Warsaw.
The manor is small, so about an hour is enough for the interiors. Spend the rest of your time in the park, which looks best in spring and autumn when there are fewer visitors.
What to see
- The small manor where Frédéric Chopin was born, with an exhibition on his family.
- The park with the Utrata river and ponds, good for a calm walk.
- The castle ruins in Sochaczew.
- The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Sochaczew, with historic locomotives.
- The Bzura battlefield and a museum devoted to September 1939.
Where to eat
Near the museum there are cafes and simple restaurants serving Polish food: chicken broth, pork cutlet, pierogi. Sochaczew has bars and pizzerias around its main square. In summer, a picnic by the Utrata with food from a local shop works well.
